Crowdsourcing Trump Resistance
Digital collaboration and crowdsourcing were common techniques used to mobilize progressives across the United States after the election of Donald Trump. WeBot is an app which can help anyone find a protest near you by scanning for local Facebook events. Intended to apply public pressure on the Trump administration, the app aims to increase the numbers of supporters at protests of all kinds. This app has the ability to transform small events into mass movements, thereby amplifying their voice and increasing their impact. They can also be used to cheoreograph crowd movement, by creating many protest sites and organizing people to move between areas however the organizers choose. The combination of the technological and physical has allowed for more intricate responses to the complicated problems of today.""
Hong Kong Protestors Use Smartphone App to Collaborate
During the 2014 Hong Kong protests, observers noticed the prevalence of the smartphone app FireChat among demonstrators. Demonstrating its popularity, the app was downloaded over 100,000 on one day of protests alone. The designer of the app, Micha Benoliel, described how the app was helping people in Hong Kong: “People in Hong Kong are using it to exchange information on what is happening – very practical information, basically. For example, areas that are blocked, where the police are or where people need help. It’s a very efficient way for people to coordinate and organise. The app is proving popular because there's such a large density of people gathering in Hong Kong and the cellular networks cannot work. Or, on Sunday for example, authorities shut down the networks.” The app operates outside of WiFi or cellular networks, operating outside of easily-blockable networks of information, empowering on-the-ground protesters to avoid government interference.
